We are an exciting enterprise based in the heart of Inverness and we wear our passionate cycling heart on our sleeve!  We work to promote healthy, happy lifestyles through cycling and to bring our local community together in a vibrant space that includes our café, workshop and venue.

Together our team has worked hard to define our business plan for growth for the next three years and we are now looking for a General Manager to lead us as we deliver the outcomes defined in that plan.  We expect our new General Manager to be as passionate about Velocity’s values as we are.

We are looking for a person who is excellent at building relationships and who is a highly-effective communicator.  Relationships drive our business.  Our General Manager will also possess the business acumen necessary to grow our organisation and the drive for results that will set the tone for a bright, unashamedly bicycle-based and sustainable future for Velocity.

Job Description

Role Title: General Manager

Role Purpose:

The General Manager role at Velocity Café and Bicycle Workshop exists to provide executive leadership for the organisation.  This role has overall responsibility for ensuring that the Organisation’s strategic aims are delivered in accordance with the defined business plan and in the context of Velocity’s ethos, vision and mission.


The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors and has direct line management responsibility for a Senior Management Team of three covering Café, Workshop and Project functions.  Velocity Café and Bicycle Workshop is a social enterprise and a company limited by guarantee.

Key Result Areas:            

Relationships – Openly communicates, shares ideas and provides timely feedback.  Values diversity in the team and recognises the value brought to the business by a range of approaches all linked by a passion for cycling.  Builds effective relationships across the whole team and fosters excellent relationships with all external stakeholders.

Communication – Uses effective listening and questioning skills to understand the needs of stakeholders, customers and colleagues.  Demonstrates a passion and in-depth knowledge of the Organisation to build trust in relationships through clear, concise presentation of Velocity’s plans for growth.

Drive for results – Executes effectively against the business plan with a focus on the key performance indicators.  Effectively assesses future opportunities to present costed, planned options for growth for the Board to consider.  Motivates self and team to drive the Organisation to a long-term, profitable and sustainable social enterprise.  Identifies and builds the business case for external restricted funding to support defined projects.

Business acumen – Excellent at identifying new opportunities and highly adept at quickly and flexibly taking advantage of these.  Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of the external market and competition to ensure Velocity is agile and responsive.  Ensures accurate financial reporting and management and understanding of financial resources.

Marketing – Understands and makes effective use of marketing skills to support the team in driving out an excellent reputation for engaging social media content.  Ensures that this content and other marketing channels delivers results in accordance with the defined indicators.  Advocates Velocity's ethos and values building these in self and the team to create a vibrant working environment where the Velocity team feel inspired and motivated in their work.

Context: Velocity operates in the context of a competitive market place for both café retail and bicycle workshop services and products.  The organisation is recognised as a leader in the social, environmental and wellbeing benefits of cycling as part of a modern and responsible lifestyle.  As a social enterprise in the current financial climate, the Organisation has to be responsive to opportunity, alive to the financial pressures of the external environment and ready to act quickly and decisively to changes as, or before, they occur.  The General Manager will be expected lead engagement with stakeholders to place Velocity at the centre of life in Inverness and the Highlands.  This will involve making key decisions in line with the Board strategy to ensure that areas of operation, location and sales are effective and in line with the Organisation’s values and responsibilities.  Velocity is a small organisation and the role will also be expected to respond flexibly to resource and staffing needs as and when they arise.

Critical Dimensions:      

This role leads an organisation of fifteen to twenty people (8 FTE), many of whom are part-time, across two different sites.  The Organisation operates off-site in the delivery of some of its projects.  The role of general manager provides leadership in relationships with public sector organisations who may also be funders; government sector funders and policy-makers; private sector funders; other third sector organisations with whom Velocity may collaborate and partner to deliver services; the education sector.  The role also line-manages the team who deliver against customer expectations and who work to source funding that supports Velocity’s aims and objectives.  The sectors in which Velocity operates are competitive and the key focus is in developing and maintaining a sustainable enterprise.

Role details:

Hours- 28 hours/week
Salary- £23,850 pro rata
Holiday- 5.6 weeks pro rata
Term: Permanent
