GoByCycle Schools Project Worker

Project Aim

To create a culture of active travel (cycling, scooting and walking) in schools promoting safer, happier and healthier communities.

Job Description

  • To deliver the Go ByCycle project to two High School and its associated primary schools (comprising one cluster) in Inverness, to promote, encourage and support active travel (cycling, scooting and walking) to and from school and for independent journeys in leisure time

  • To aim to address the drop off in cycling in the transition from primary schools to secondary schools and to support girls to cycle in similar numbers to boys

  • To support staff and volunteers promoting active travel within the school community

Duties:

  1. To promote active travel (cycling, scooting and walking) across two secondary schools and their associated primary schools

  2. To consult with pupils to develop a range of activities which will engage pupils during the transition from primary to secondary school

  3. To plan and deliver a range of sessions specifically aimed at girls to increase the numbers of girls riding bikes, but not to the exclusion of working with boys too

  4. To plan, implement and deliver a mix of practical sessions, lesson based sessions, promotional events, competitions, rides, groups, and roles (eg Bike Champions) which encourage and increase rates of active travel

  5. To support schools to develop creative ways to reward people for choosing active travel

  6. To undertake regular consultation with pupils, teachers, volunteers and the school community to assess the successes and learning points of the project, implement changes as needed and to monitor impact of what is being done.

  7. To deliver Bikeability 1 and 2 training to school children to increase their confidence and ability to cycle safely on roads, and to recruit volunteers to ensure continuation of training where possible once the post has ended

  8. To deliver Dr Bike and maintenance sessions to children and adults to teach them the basics of bike maintenance

  9. To work collaboratively with the rest of the Velocity Team, sharing resources, equipment and learning

  10. To share information within the Velocity team, on Facebook, online and through other avenues

  11. To work closely with partners (the Highland Council’s Road Safety team, Sustrans and other partners) to share best practice and learning

  12. To monitor project expenditure on a monthly basis and ensure the project delivers its aims within budget

  13. To ensure that all activity is risk assessed, is delivered safely and complies with Velocity’s Policies and Procedures

  14. To compile progress reports on a 3 monthly basis for the Board of Velocity

  15. To carry out other duties as required

Skills & Experience:

Essential:

  • Passionate about the benefits cycling can bring to people and want to widen access to this

  • Previous experience of working positively with groups, and particularly young people

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and gather a positive team around you

  • Excellent communicator

  • Good project building with previous experience of delivering sessions to groups

  • Ability to monitor the effectiveness of services offered and tailor this to the needs of the people involved

  • Ability to work positively and effectively in a small team

  • Driving licence

  • Computer literate

Desirable:

  • Excellent working knowledge of bicycles and high skill level of bike maintenance

  • Bikeability Instructor trained

  • Cycle Ride Leader/ Cycle Trainer Plus trained

Remuneration & Other Details

Salary: £11.50 per hour (£20,930 pro rata)

Hours: 35 hours per week

Contract length: Fixed term contract to end June 2019 (with possible extension dependant on funding)

Annual Leave: 28 days pro rata
