Ayesha McGowan

Ayesha McGowan is a relative newcomer to bicycle racing, but she won her first state championship in her third race. It didn’t take her long to notice that there weren’t many other women of African-American descent on the scene, and she’s now on a mission to change that – to become the world’s first female African-American pro cyclist, to be the role model she never had, and to encourage and inspire other women of colour to follow their dreams, whatever they may be.

Ayesha comes from a background of bicycle advocacy, and has worked as Branding Administrator for We Bike NYC, an organization devoted to empowerment of women through bicycles, and as Director of Programs for InTandem, a project that helps people with disabilities get into cycling.

Having moved from Brooklyn to California in 2015, she’s now training up to 20 hours a week, racing at Cat 2 level, regularly placing in the top ten, and hoping to catch the eye of professional road teams. She’s still passionate about getting other people on bikes, and her ‘Do Better Together’ virtual ride project has inspired countless people to cycle more, cycle together, and challenge themselves.

Ayesha is supported by Cannondale, SRAM, Skratch Labs, and Cycliq and has been featured in VICE Sports, Bicycling Magazine, and BBC World.
