Social Ride - ord hill

  • Velocity Cafe & Bicycle Workshop 1 Crown Avenue Inverness, Scotland, IV2 3NF United Kingdom (map)

Join us on our weekly social ride to ride with a group of friendly, welcoming folk- no lycra required, and nobody ever left behind.

Meeting at Velocity for a 10am setting off time, this partially off-road ride starts with a trip over the Kessock Bridge following shared cycle routes until heading North from the A9 and heading for the hills. The trip up and around Ord Hill features a series of inclines, with plenty of opportunities to rest, taking in stunning views of the Firth. What goes up must come down - the second half of the ride takes you back down off the hill and down to Cycle Route 1 alongside the A9. There are then two options, a drop down to the shore road along North Kessock requires one more climb up to the bridge - while making use of the dedicated cycle path along the A9 may be preferable for those who have had their fill of hills.

This route has significant climbs but includes a number of suitable rest stops along the way with views to make it worthwhile. The total ride distance is approx. 20km (13miles) and will take around 2.5 hrs to complete with stops stop. You can expect an average pace of around 12km/hr (8mph) on this ride, with slower speeds on the climbs.

No booking required, but please ensure you have completed an Emergency Contact Form before your first ride with us. While our social rides are led by trained volunteers, it’s important for participants to be confident and capable independent riders.

As with all outdoor activities, it is important that you attend well prepared. We recommend you check up on the weather forecast before heading out, and bring warm layers, gloves, and waterproofs even if it looks nice. Please also ensure you have something to drink and eat for the journey. We strongly recommend you wear a helmet and bring a set of charged lights - particularly at this time of year.

You can find more information on being prepared for a ride on our Active Travel Hub Cycling pages
