Women’s cycle to health

Introducing Riding Through the Dark, a film about elite and non-elite cyclists who speak about their experience of riding through mental and physical darkness in the Highlands of Scotland. Featuring athletes from The Adventure Syndicate and women from Velocity’s Cycle to Health project.

This film highlights the heroism of ‘ordinary’ people and the ordinariness of people who can be perceived as heroic. Elite and non-elite cyclists share how group cycling helps them to cope with periods of mental darkness.

Insights from some very inspiring women show how bike journeys can shape journeys of the mind. Featuring participants from Velocity’s Women’s Cycle to Health project and athletes from The Adventure Syndicate including Lee Craigie and Emily Chappell as they complete their record-breaking 36-hour North Coast 500 ride.

bespoked

The road to mental health recovery can look different for everyone. Some find it helps to share the journey by pedalling together as part of a small group. In this film, we meet a number of groups who have faced different challenges from anxiety to PND and learned ways of coping through Velocity’s tailored outreach programme, Bespoked. The project aimed to increase individual’s mental and physical wellbeing through supportive, regular group cycling sessions. This project was delivered from 2019 - 2020 thanks to The European Social Fund.
